Opinion: The Problem with 40mm
And why I almost love the Ricoh GRiii X, but just can’t.

Before we start, let me start by saying three (3) things:
- This will be a subjective case I’m presenting, you may disagree, you may see things differently, that’s okay. If you like 40mm, more power to you, but I don’t.
- This is also NOT an article “hating” on the GRiii X, Ricoh as a company, or people who like the 40mm version of the GRiii. I just think that “40mm” is presented in an inaccurate and misleading way to many potential buyers of the GRiii X. I also think the misleading presentation of 40mm is provided NOT by Ricoh themselves, but by reviewers and influencers who use the camera for a week or so and then hop onto the next trending topic.
- The GRiii (28mm) and GRiii X (40mm) are both great cameras, I’ve had both, and I really liked both. They changed the way I approached photography. They are simple, easy to use, but honestly quite powerful and capable little cameras for what they are. They even made me enjoy the hassle free shooting experience so much…that I couldn’t bare to bother editing and importing my Canon R5’s massive 45mpx raws.
This directly lead to me writing my trending article “I hate my Canon R5” (clickbait title included).
